Obese dachshund gets to stay at foster home where he dropped 18 pounds

1/26/2013

Obie the dachshund's long custody battle is over. The Portland, Ore., pup will remain with his current foster owner, Nora Vanatta, who reached a settlement with Oregon Dachshund Rescue. Vanatta took Obie in August, after learning that ODR was seeking a foster home for the then-77 pound dog, whom they'd rescued from his elderly owners. Vanatta, an ex-vet tech, put Obie on a diet and began documenting his weight loss, leading to worldwide stardom for the little guy. In October, the shelter claimed Vanatta was exploiting the pup for financial gain and filed suit to get him back, to no avail. The Obester is now down to 49 pounds — still overweight, sure, but making excellent progress. Vanatta calls him a "magical dog," and we'd have to agree. [Source]
