Scientists discover oldest insects ever encased in amber
8/29/2012Thanks to a few drops of tree sap, scientists have discovered the oldest known insects ever. A fly and two mites were found in tiny droplets of amber in northern Italy. The three specimens date back to the Triassic Period, approximately 230 million years ago, shattering the previous record for oldest animal encased in amber by 100 million years. Although the subjects may be tiny, they'll allow scientists to study the evolutionary adaptability of the creatures, as well as giving them more info about how current species came into existence.
