Oregon's people and its waters are brimming with caffeine
8/6/2012If you find yourself speeding through a brisk swim off the coast of Oregon and then raving through chattering teeth about how invigorating it was, consider that those waters are chock-full of caffeine. Coffee goes in humans, humans make waste, waste is dumped into ocean, and now the waters are basically Mountain Dew. Well, maybe not that extreme, but caffeine contamination is high enough around the remoter coasts to cause measurable changes to mussels (not usually a perky animal, they’ve started churning out specialized proteins to deal with cellular stress) and frighteningly, if caffeine can make it through water treatment processes, other contaminants probably can too.
