Owner sells penny for $1.5M, but waits a year too late
4/21/2012This humble penny is now worth $1.15 million after selling at an auction this week to a group of unnamed investors. The rare, experimental penny was minted in 1792 and was one of the first ever made by the U.S. Mint. Only 14 examples of the coin exist. It is made mostly out of copper with a small plug of silver, which was added to increase the weight. Sold by an owner who held onto it for 10 years, the penny went for a bargain when compared to a similar coin that netted close to $3 million just a year ago.
