Pack-raping pirate bugs are the pricks of the insect world

Warehouse pirate bugs are rivaling humans for the title of Earth's most hideous creature, with the discovery that the males repeatedly rape their female counterparts using holes they make with their daggerlike penises. The male tears through the female's flesh to insert semen directly into her abdomen. Researchers at Sweden's Umeå University believe the male is able to use more traditional (and less hideously brutal) methods, but the "dagger-penis mating" method seems to play an important biological role. After penetration, the female can sense her days are numbered and produces eggs at a much faster rate.
