Pandas could be the ones to save humanity from disease

1/1/2013

When the next superbug sets humanity in its sights and starts making us ill, it could be giant pandas that come to our rescue. Researchers at the Life Sciences College of Nanjing Agricultural University in China have found that the bears produce an antibiotic in their blood that kills bacteria and fungi. The antibiotic could be used to create new treatments to superbugs and other diseases that are growing resistant to current treatments. Luckily, scientists have been successful in synthesizing the antibiotic in labs, so the 1,600 pandas left in the wild can rest easy and continue eating bamboo and avoid mating. [Source]
