Parents charged with abuse for allegedly exorcising their 10-year-old

A couple from the Democratic Republic of Congo who had been living in Sweden were indicted for child abuse after allegedly trying to "exorcise" their then-10-year-old daughter, whom they believed was a witch. The charges are based on three alleged acts of abuse from between February 2007 and February 2008, during which the girl claims her parents beat her unconscious and made her drink a mix of cleaning products and her own urine. The child was removed from her parents’ custody in 2008 and has been with a foster family since then. According to the Boraas Tidning, the parents applied for social welfare funds to bring the girl to DR Congo for an exorcism; the assistance was denied and the girl was soon taken out of the home.
