See this starved 'miracle' dog's heartwarming recovery

9/20/2012

Here's a tragic tale with a happy ending. Right before St. Patrick's Day 2011, a starved dog weighing just 19 pounds was discovered stuffed in the trash chute of a high-rise in Newark, N.J. Graphic photos of the pit bull mix, dubbed Patrick, broke the hearts of dog lovers across the country. So we're happy to report that Patrick's foster mom Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, an administrator at the Garden State Vet Specialists where he's been treated, says "he's doing wonderful these days." He's no longer frightened of strangers, and his favorite game is tug of war. You can follow Patrick's recovery in the gallery above — but be warned that some of the photos taken immediately after he was rescued are hard to stomach. Patrick's former owner Kisha Curtis, who claims she tied him in her hallway but denies throwing him into the trash, still faces ongoing animal cruelty charges.
