Pelicans pushed around by Sandy get a first-class flight home

11/18/2012

It's not often birds get a free ride in a private plane. However these brown pelicans just got done battling Superstorm Sandy's winds, and boy, are their wings tired. The storm’s winds knocked these two so far afield of their natural habitat in Florida that one wound up making landfall in icy-cold New Jersey and collapsed at the side of the road, while the other landed on a fishing boat near Block Island. In a warming show of solidarity with all creatures touched by this disaster, animal rescue workers collected $2,000 of donations to fund the private flight that took them to the Mary Keller Seabird Rehabilitation Sanctuary in Florida, where they'll be much warmer than where they landed.
