Devoted penguin couple spends 16 years being faithful to each other

11/19/2012

Researchers conducting a 30-year study on Magellanic penguins have uncovered something unexpected: a love story. Two penguins, identified by metal bands and tracked by satellites, were shown to have mated only with each other for 16 years. When it's not breeding season, the couple separates and migrates 10,000 miles to warmer waters alone, yet every year in mating season they find each other again. Usually this species of penguin "divorces" if they fail to have chicks, or they find other partners after five to 10 years. This faithful pair has beaten all the odds in a love story as epic as any human one. We love it. [Source]
