'Activated almonds' are a must for pretentious foodies11/5/2012
Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans made a fatal mistake recently: sharing his over-the-top daily diet in a magazine profile. The article revealed that Evans feeds on "alkalized water" and "activated almonds" (no, we're not exactly sure what those are either). Twitter users were quick to ridicule the chef, launching #activatedalmonds to the top of Australia's trending topics. Evans responded to the mockery on Facebook, saying he's accustomed to scorn and that he finds it "bizarre" that some find his choices "offensive." He defended his culinary choices with a quote from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer — which doesn't seem like such a smart move for someone wanting to appear less pretentious. [Source]
