Petition implores town to save woman's awful restoration job

8/24/2012

An elderly Spanish woman's failed attempt at restoring a 100-year-old painting might not be sitting well with the work's owners, but the public wants to make sure her interpretation is preserved. An online petition with more than 10,000 signatures implores the town of Borja to leave the touchups by Cecilia Giménez as they are, saying, quite tongue-in-cheekly, the tweaks reveal "a subtle critique of creationist theories of the Church." That might have something to do with an analysis that says Giménez's version resembles a "very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic." Still, authorities are considering vandalism charges against Giménez for her handiwork. [Source]
