Car that runs on air could save drivers big bucks at the pump

1/23/2013

A car that runs on air may sound like a pipe dream, but that dream may be coming true. Peugeot Citroën says its "Hybrid Air" engine system, which runs on gas and compressed air — rather than on gas and electricity, like most current hybrid vehicles — should be ready for the road by 2016. By 2020, the company expects it to be capable of getting 117 mpg and estimates a 45 percent savings for most drivers. And because air power kicks in automatically at speeds under 43 mph, city drivers may coast on air about 60 to 80 percent of the time, saving them up to 80 percent in gas costs. That would definitely have drivers walking on air. [Source]
