Philip Roth is letting go of writing for a pastoral retirement
11/9/2012Philip Roth is one of the heavyweights of modern American literature. But it’s likely the author of "Portnoy’s Complaint" and "American Pastoral" will never again publish a work. Last month, the 78-year-old author told French magazine Les Inrocks he had written nothing new in the past three years and would not write another novel. Roth said that at age 74, he reread his favorite novels and then reread all of his own books, starting with the newest and working his way back, in order to see if he had "wasted his time writing." Luckily, Roth felt that he had in fact done the best he could; unluckily, that made him decide that he was done with fiction. "I do not want to read, to write more," he said. [Source]
