Photo showing Heineken branding at dogfight goes viral4/18/2012
If you needed further proof that the Internet never forgets, visit Heineken's Facebook page, which was plastered for most of the day with pictures of an illegal dogfighting match, apparently from 2011. Though the event is a year old, the image has gone viral and those Heineken banners, which seem to suggest that the beer brand sanctioned the dog fight, have riled up Internet audiences. For its part, Heineken denies sponsorship of -- or even knowledge of -- the event: In a statement, the beer brand said it "was not and would never knowingly be associated with illegal activities, including those involving cruelty to animals." Is the key word there "knowingly"?
In an e-mail to msnNOW, a Heineken spokeswoman says the photo is from a nightclub in Mongolia, which hosted "a dog fight of which we had no knowledge and were not involved in any way." The banners, the company says, are from a separate promotional event held the previous evening at the same venue. The spokeswoman says Heineken has pulled all their products from the nightclub. Heineken's full response is available here (age verification required).
Would you boycott Heineken if the brand sponsored a dogfight?
