Pill that could prevent HIV may soon be approved

5/9/2012

The Food and Drug Administration says a daily pill to prevent HIV appears to be safe and effective, meaning it is closer to being available. The medication, Truvada, is already used to treat people infected with the virus. Researchers first reported in 2010 that it could be used to prevent people from contracting HIV and advocacy groups have since said it's a vital tool to prevent HIV infection, in tandem with condoms, counseling and other measures. A panel of FDA advisers will vote on Thursday to recommend whether Truvada should be approved as a preventative treatment.
