Library offers books, magazines, pole-dancing classes

2/7/2013

Librarians brainstorming for a creative way to get more people into the stacks need only look across the pond for inspiration. At the Mayfield Library in Dalkeith, Scotland, patrons can now come in for a free pole-dancing class — and leave with an armful of books. "The pole fitness session is a fun and interesting way of encouraging more people into our libraries, trying out all the services on offer and ultimately borrowing more books," one local authority said. Another profile-raising gambit from the library includes "booky table tennis," in which books are used instead of paddles. [Source]
