Poll shows 'pro-choice' support is near all-time low

5/24/2012

The percentage of Americans who identify themselves as pro-choice has dropped significantly since last summer and is close to an all-time low. A Gallup poll conducted in early May shows that 41 percent of Americans consider themselves pro-choice (a 6 percent drop since May 2011), while a near-record 50 percent say they're pro-life. The decline in pro-choice supporters was noticed in all three political groups, although Independent pro-lifers now outnumber the right-to-choosers for only the second time in the past decade.

Despite the swing toward the pro-life side of the scale, Gallup notes that Americans haven't changed their "fundamental views" on the issue of abortion: 51 percent of those polled consider it morally wrong.
