Pope Benedict to ditch snazzy red shoes, get new 'pope emeritus' title

2/26/2013

Those of you wondering what, exactly, we're supposed to call Pope Benedict XVI after his resignation now have an answer. The old pope? The former pope? The guy who used to be pope? Nope! As of Thursday, he'll be known as "pope emeritus" and will keep the honorific title "Your Holiness." He'll also wear a "simple white cassock," but ditch his papal ring of office (it will be destroyed) and kick off his snappy red "shoes of the fisherman." Instead, he'll wear brown loafers, specifically a pair given to him by shoemakers in Mexico, the Vatican said. Presumably he'll get some more, too. Surely His Holiness the pope emeritus will merit more than one pair of shoes? [Source]
