Congress ponders catching up with states, reforming federal pot laws
2/4/2013Pot fans, take note: A quiet but steady movement is under way in Congress to change America’s marijuana laws. Lawmakers have been working on various bills, and Democratic Reps. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Jared Polis of Colorado plan to introduce the first ones Tuesday. If Polis gets his way, his bill would regulate weed in a similar way to how the feds regulates alcohol, requiring federal permits and prohibiting transportation to states where marijuana is still illegal. Blumenauer's measure would institute a federal excise tax on pot. Why does this matter? Because, Blumenauer says, "We're still arresting two-thirds of a million people for use of a substance that a majority feel should be legal." [Source]
