Prom queen allegedly faked cancer, got $17K in donations
4/23/2012A Texas prom queen is in jail after allegedly lying about having cancer and collecting $17,000 in charitable donations for her foundation, "Achieve the Dream." Angie Gomez, 19, reportedly said she had six months to live. A local high school held a special prom in her honor because she said the illness had made her miss her own senior prom, but police began investigating after a complaint that Gomez didn't look sick and discovered the hospitals had no record of her as a patient. The teen's lawyer claims she had leukemia as a child and was trying to raise money for other cancer patients. Unfortunately, it's not a new scam -- earlier this month, a New York bride who allegedly faked cancer to pay for her wedding was indicted.
Why do you think Gomez collected the donations?
