Prosecutors: Norway killer not so bad, just crazy

Anders Breivik, the man who killed 77 and wounded 242 during last summer's rampage, is insane. That was the closing argument from Norway prosecutors, who've requested that Breivik be sentenced to compulsory psychiatric care. One set of court-appointed psychiatrists disagreed, claiming him sane enough to be held criminally responsible. (Another deemed him psychotic, possibly explaining the perpetual smile on his face during the trial.) Our initial reaction to today's argument was "WTF!" Any type of "care" sounds too good for Breivik, although he could be held indefinitely in a psychiatric ward. Norway doesn't have the death penalty: The maximum sentence is an anemic 21 years, with provisions for an extension. A verdict is due later this summer.
