Does Puerto Rico want to be the 51st state? Sí!
11/7/2012Ready for a 51st star on the flag? Voters in Puerto Rico are — most of them voted, by a thin margin, to approve a nonbinding referendum on statehood last night. The island has been a U.S. territory for 114 years; in a two-part vote, 54 percent of voters expressed a preference to change that relationship, with more than half preferring statehood (61 percent) over independence (5 percent) and 33 percent supporting "sovereign free association," which would allow greater autonomy. It's not a done deal yet — Congress would still have to approve any statehood initiative. [Source]
