But what are they? And what are they doing in the arid scrub near the tiny town of Vail, Ariz.? The crack investigative team at KGUN-TV in Tucson tried to get to the bottom of what Geradine Vargas and her husband discovered on an outing to shoot pictures in the Arizona desert, but the best guess of various experts polled was that it was slime mold or jelly fungus, which wouldn't seem likely in that climate. More likely it's a slew of Orbeez … or those jelly balls used to keep flowers fresh, but who would drive all the way out to the desert to dump them?
