1/17/2013So many smug, healthy folk in Western nations are chowing down on quinoa that the people who were eating the Peruvian grain long before "superfoods" were a thing can no longer afford it. The price of the protein-rich, low-fat grain has tripled since 2006 thanks to Western demand. In Lima, Peru, quinoa is now more expensive than chicken. Quinoa was a nutritious food staple for the poorer people of Peru and Bolivia but now junk food imported from overseas is cheaper. So whether vegetarian or carnivore, now we all can enjoy our meals with a side of guilt. [Source]
