Don't stress, wannabe non-smokers: quitting lowers anxiety levels

Any smokers nervously eyeing a New Year’s resolution of kicking the habit should take heart. If smokers can get through the hellish withdrawal period, they most likely will be rewarded with feelings of relative serenity and calm, especially if they're edgy kind of people to begin with. A British Journal of Psychiatry study tracked nearly 500 smokers attending UK quit clinics and found a "significant" decrease in anxiety levels among the smokers (all 68 of them!) who had quit after six months. The lower levels of anxiety were seen in those with mood and anxiety disorders "that smoked to cope," as opposed to those who "smoked for pleasure." [Source]
