Marines set to ring in New Year with random alcohol tests

12/27/2012

In an effort to curb underage drinking and drinking while on duty, the U.S. Marine Corps will begin carrying out random blood-alcohol tests. And the limits are strict. Marines who blow a .01 could be sent for "training, education and further screening" at a center for substance abuse by a commander. And if a Marine blows a .04, half the current legal driving limit in the U.S., they'll be sent to see medical personnel who will determine whether or not they are fit for duty. Studies by the U.S. Institute of Medicine have found that 47 percent of military personnel admitted to binge drinking, while 20 percent said they were heavy drinkers. [Source]
