For allowing Kelly Shoppach to steal the first base of his career, Jose Molina has been disowned by his family. #notanauthenticMolinabrother

Red Sox catcher retires award for worst slide ever

4/14/2012

Just give Kelly Shoppach the green light and let the Fenway Park groundskeepers fill in the divots. The Red Sox backup catcher hadn't even attempted a stolen base in his first 463 big league games, and a look at this video all you need to understand why. Yet despite starting his "slide" somewhere in South Boston, Shoppach managed to stumble, stagger and flop into second base safely, thanks mostly to Tampa Bay's Jose Molina pump faking his throw 37 times. A #NameThatSlide contest immediately erupted on Twitter and produced some beauties in "Shopp til you Dropp" and "Who moved the base?" - though the winner was probably @dougmaguire who came up with "The Back Up Catcher."
