Water turns bloodred off Australia, prompting Biblical cries

11/27/2012

A rare algae bloom has turned water bloodred off Bondi beach in Australia, causing Twitter to buzz with Biblical quotes and end-of-the-world predictions. A tweep called @that_was_random warned the images are "straight out of revelations" while @takestoolong2 quipped, "Where did I read about this, oh yeah, the Bible." @ACSpollen blamed the "Mayans." Experts are less cryptic, pointing to a thick bloom of marine algae called noctiluca scintillans — also known as "Sea Sparkle" due to its bioluminescence. As cool as that sounds, this is stuff you probably want to stay out of, and the beaches are closed. Apocalypse or no apocalypse. [Source]
