Linesman dies after attack following youth soccer game

12/4/2012

An absurdly macabre and sad story from the Netherlands, where a man named Richard Nieuwenhuizen, who often officiated soccer matches, died after being beaten by several teens after working a match. Police arrested three players between 15- and 16-years of age after they kicked and beat Nieuwenhuizen, who had been working as a linesman during a game his son was playing in. The 41-year-old died the following day. Unlike the NFL and its adherence to “the games must go on” obliviousness, the club the players belonged to canceled all its games for next weekend, and also banned the players involved. [Source]
