The planet's 100 richest people earn enough to end world poverty
1/20/2013Last year, the 100 richest people in the world earned enough, four times over, to ease the mega-poverty suffered by the poorest on the planet, according to a new report from the British charity Oxfam. Yes, you read that right. Oxfam's report, dubbed The Cost Of Inequality: How Wealth And Income Extremes Hurt Us All, was released in time for next week's World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and it has more sobering reminders of the world's escalating economic discrepancies — like the fact that the richest 1 percent of the global population has upped its income by a whopping 60 percent in the last 20 years. Oxfam wants leaders to form an economic New Deal to address global inequality; we just hope those leaders are listening. [Source]
