Hockey team tries to honor Latinos with cheerfully tasteless jerseys
11/10/2012If you’re going to celebrate another culture’s heritage it’s usually best not do something racist. On Nov. 16, the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs will honor, well, we’re not sure who exactly. Nominally it’s supposed to be a celebration (sponsored by Corona, natch) of Mexico? Central America? Moderately ethnic chain restaurants? The team will wear a cheerfully offensive alternate jersey that reads "Los IceHogs" with the team’s Hammy Hog mascot sporting a bandito-esque mustache and a sombrero. Also note the jersey's tacky Mexican-restaurant-wallpaper color scheme. As if the jerseys weren’t bad enough, the first 2,500 fans receive commemorative maracas. [Source]
