Researchers in the U.K. have discovered that ancient Roman disk-shaped pieces, just a couple inches long, actually weren't used as game pieces, as long believed. Instead, they were a sort of bizarre toilet paper. While ancient Romans were known to ... clean up with sponges dipped in vinegar, it seems they also used these odd ceramic pieces (which does not sound comfortable, but hey). "They would have been probably quite scratchy to use," a museum curator agreed. "But in the Roman era it was that or very little else." [Source]
