British animal charity reportedly killed 3,400 healthy animals in 2011

12/30/2012

Britain's biggest animal welfare charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is under fire after a newspaper revealed it euthanizes thousands of animals each year for "non-medical reasons." The Mail on Sunday discovered that in 2011 the RSPCA destroyed 3,400 animals for reasons such as lack of space in animal shelters. Some criticize the group for focusing more on heavy-handed prosecutions for pet neglect, rather than finding homes for animals who face being euthanized. An RSPCA spokesperson rejected claims that it "routinely" puts down healthy animals, but admitted that putting homeless animals to sleep was occasionally "a sad reality of the work that we do." [Source]
