Stillborn babies, rotting feet just might stop Russians from smoking

9/5/2012

You may not have to gaze at sewn-up corpses or diseased mouths when you pick up a pack of cigarettes here in the U.S., but in Russia, anything goes. The country’s health ministry has unveiled a series of extremely graphic images on its website to deter hard-core Slavic smokers from lighting up. Not sure what we mean by “extremely graphic”? We’re talking a stillborn baby, a rotting gangrenous foot and a face prematurely ravaged by the effects of smoking, among others (yes, there are more). Russian cigarette companies will be required to incorporate these images onto their packaging starting next May. Makes the commercials we show here of those poor folks with voice boxes look pretty tame. (Source)
