Hero teacher bravely confronts, disarms California school shooter

1/11/2013

Taft, Calif., could have been the next Newtown, if not for Ryan Heber. The Taft Union High School science teacher confronted an armed gunman at the school, eventually convincing the unnamed 16-year-old to put down his weapons. The gunman had already opened fire on one classmate before Heber — who was grazed by a shotgun pellet — stepped in. Heber and campus supervisor Kim Fields got the alleged shooter to admit that he didn't want to shoot them, and they successfully disarmed the boy before the police arrived. "He's not the kind of teacher a student would try to hurt," Heber's father said. "He's definitely someone who could talk a kid down in an emergency." [Source]
