Sandy left 1M dump trucks' worth of sand blowing in the wind
1/16/2013If you were looking for a handy info nugget to help wrap your head around the magnitude of the environmental damage wreaked by Hurricane Sandy, this should do the trick: The super-storm blew away enough sand to fill 1 million dump trucks. (Actually, it's hard to visualize a million of anything, but you see where we're going with this.) The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that 15 million cubic yards of sand blew away during the storm. On some Jersey Shore beaches, waves still crash on bare pilings, or even on beachfront homes.
