Saudi female tracking system texts men when women leave the kingdom
11/24/2012For anyone already fuming over Saudi women’s lack of civil rights, the news that authorities now have an electronic tracking system that texts male guardians when women leave the country should stoke the fire. Saudi women already need permission from a male guardian to leave the ultra-conservative kingdom, and now men are getting text messages as soon as women pass through immigration. Women’s rights activist Manal al-Sherif, already famous for urging women to defy the driving ban, spread the word about the new monitoring system via Twitter after hearing that a husband had been texted even though he and his wife left the country together. Cue Twitter outrage from freedom-lovers everywhere. [Source]
