School district wants to hand out free condoms to students
3/17/2012It's likely that the Springfield, Mass. Public Schools will soon be referenced by one or more of the presidential candidates, since the city's School Committee tentatively approved a measure that would provide free condoms to students ages 12 and older. The measure -- which still needs a final vote for approval -- has the support of the city's mayor (who is also the committee's chairman), who says he wants to combat teenage pregnancy. If the policy is approved, parents could opt their children out of the program, but otherwise, the condoms would be dispensed by school nurses and school clinics. Literature on abstinence would also be passed out.
