School says teacher made kids wear dog 'cone of shame'

5/10/2012

Cones of shame might work for Dug the dog from "Up," but that doesn't mean it's a sensible disciplinary tactic for children. Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp, a teacher in Florida's Pasco County, could be fired for using just such a device on her ninth-graders after she showed the Pixar movie to her students. She allegedly brought in her own dog cone, which she used to "redirect student behavior." A letter from the county superintendent states that students late to class were given the option of sitting at a "tardy table" or wearing the cone; a student also claims the teacher used the cone as punishment for drinking soda in class. Bailey-Cutkomp has been removed from teaching while awaiting a hearing.
