Guess what the world's worst sound is (Hint: It's not Nickelback)

Those diligent scientists have come up with the definitive answer for the worst sound in the world. With test patients hooked up to MRI scanners, researchers at the U.K’s University of Newcastle subjected them to sounds including a crying animal, screeching tires and the classic fingernails on a chalkboard to find out which ones were the most unpleasant. (Don’t you wish you had been part of that study?) The worst of the worst, though, was none of those: Topping the chart was the sound of a knife on a glass bottle. Scientists hoping to figure out how our brains "decode" various unpleasant sounds found, extremely unsurprisingly, that the unpleasant sounds were generally high frequency, which is tough for human ears to tolerate.
