Scientists ponder computer that can outlast the universe
7/7/2012In case you were hoping that those embarrassing pictures you posted online would eventually disappear, think again -- we may be able to create a computer that can survive even the death of the universe. The project centers on building a crystal that is symmetrical through both space and time by causing its atoms to rotate in a consistent pattern. These "time crystals" would also have to be at their lowest possible energy state, meaning that they would continue to rotate even once the universe has cooled to a consistent temperature through entropy. That may be confusing, but you'll have some time to study up before the iTime Crystal shows up in the Apple store: The project is still theoretical until scientists can test the crystal in a simulated "end of the universe" environment.
What would you do with a computer that could outlast the universe?
