Scientists say famous 'Twinkie defense' might have merit
3/15/2012The "Twinkie defense" has become synonymous with a dubious position ever since it was used to defend Dan White against murder charges in 1979. (White's lawyers argued that he was depressed, noting that he had switched his diet to junk food, and thus had "diminshed capacity"). It didn't work for White, who was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, but scientists now believe they've indeed found a link between trans fatty acids and irritability and aggression. "This adds further rationale to recommendations to avoid eating trans fats," says study author Beatrice Golomb, who adds that trans fats should perhaps be removed from "institutions like schools and prisons" -- where heightened aggression could become a serious problem.
