Man thought to be in vegetative state tells docs he's not in pain
11/14/2012Earlier this year, a woman declared brain dead gave birth to twins. Now, the medical miracles continue: A Canadian man who docs thought was in a vegetative state for more than a decade has amazingly communicated via a diagnostic machine, reporting that he isn't in pain. When asked a question, Scott Routley's brain patterns showed he had a "conscious, thinking mind," according to doctors, and the groundbreaking test has forced them to reassess what a "vegetative" state is. Medical textbooks will need to be rewritten, they say. Routley's parents say they've always believed their son was conscious and communicating by lifting a thumb or moving his eyes, but medical staff had never before accepted it. [Source]
