Scrabble player collapses 15 hours into marathon session
4/17/2012Make sure you drink up before you hunker down to play that bingo. Raymond Tate, who was seeking to snap the Scrabble world record in Scotland Sunday, collapsed from dehydration 15 hours into a marathon game that was still hours from completion. The tournament organizer said Tate, now resting up, and his partner, Craig Beevers, appeared to be well on their way to beating the record score of 162,171 in 24 hours. "They were playing faster and scoring higher than necessary...so I think the record was unlikely to survive," the organizer said, adding that he was "desperately disappointed" to see a health scare "highjack" (raw score of 28 points) the tile-wielding duo's perhaps "quixotic" (26 points) goal.
