See how a girl paints a magical world for a 1-winged dragon

5/14/2012

This beautifully animated short, which features a lyrical tin whistle soundtrack and poignant storyline, is getting a lot of online accolades. Made by Toniko Pantoja, a second-year student at the California Institute of the Arts, it tells the tale of a girl commissioned to paint over a graying mural in the ground. As she begins, the young artist slips, falling down a rabbit hole of sorts and into a mystical world where she meets the goofy, smiling "Crayon Dragon." The two embark on a colorful painting escapade, bringing art to life -- literally. But when she paints some dragon friends for her lonely companion, she learns he can't join them because he only has one wing. We won't spoil the ending but will just say that it's well worth watching.
