US shark attacks hit 12-year high, meaning every week is Shark Week
2/12/2013Planning a trip to the beach for spring break? Stay positive, and don't pack a tourniquet or anything, because you're NOT going to get bitten by a shark. Probably. After reviewing the awesomely named International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida, researchers realized that the number of shark attacks in the United States reached a 12-year high, averaging just over one a week. There were 53 attacks (one of which was fatal) in 2012, the most that were reported since 2000. Of those "Jaws"-like incidents, 26 took place in Florida, 10 were in Hawaii, and California and South Carolina had five each. So yeah, we've heard that Nebraska is lovely in the springtime. [Source]
