Shark bite off Maui nearly costs vacationing Oregon man his leg

12/1/2012

When 61-year-old Thomas Kennedy of Lake Oswego, Ore., booked his flight to Maui for vacation this year, he probably didn't expect to return home in bandages. Kennedy went out snorkeling near Kalama Beach Park on Friday with some friends and was attacked by what he believes was a 10-foot tiger shark. Although the shark noshed on Kennedy's leg, he was able to get back to his friend Holly, an emergency room nurse, who successfully used the leash from Kennedy's paddleboard as a tourniquet. The pair then made it safely back to shore and got Kennedy to a hospital, where he is currently in recovery. Lying in a hospital bed isn't how anyone wants to spend the last leg of their vacation, but we suspect Kennedy’s mainly happy to be alive. [Source]
