She has no home, no money — just wifi and an iPhone
6/26/2012Ever passed a homeless person using a cellphone and thought, "That's kind of weird?" Adelle Hartley from Sydney, Australia, is one of those people: She owns an iPhone and a laptop computer, but has no money for food and counts herself among Sydney's homeless. A former IT professional, she now wears a sandwich board that reads "Will code 4 latte" in hopes of finding work to support herself. Her pricey gadgets confuse some passers-by: "One guy came up and yelled at me the other day," she revealed, explaining it's "not that expensive" to own a cellphone these days. A spokeswoman from community service organization Mission Australia said no one should judge homeless people with phones, as "on the streets it can be very wise to have means of contact."
