Not to freak you out, but your work schedule might be killing you
7/28/2012Sick of working the night shift? If so, the reason might be that it’s literally making you sick. A study published in the British Medical Journal says shift workers — meaning people who don’t work traditional 9-to-5 hours — are at a greater risk for heart problems than their counterparts with normal schedules. People who worked “regular evening or night shifts, rotating or split shifts that can vary in time depending on the day or week and other irregular work schedules” were more likely to have a heart attack, coronary event or stroke, and those who worked night shifts specifically had a 41 percent increase in risk of having a coronary event. Researchers said the shifts disrupt natural sleep cycles, circadian rhythms and work-life balance. [Source]
